Happy UFO day! For decades, UFO sightings have been the subject of much debate. Regardless of your opinions on whether or not any sightings were legitimate, you have to admit - some of them are downright creepy. Here are some of the UFO encounters that even the sceptics find themselves unnerved by.
The Washington DC UFO incident: For two weeks in the summer of 1952, a series of UFO sightings were reported over Washington DC, by Air Force pilots, people on the ground, and even radar equipment. This equipment was at one point tracking seven unidentified objects, that were moving far too erratically to be aircraft. A week later, the exact same thing happened again, and fighter jets were sent to investigate. One reported nothing; the other clearly saw four orbs of light. The official explanation was the radar equipment was malfunctioning; this of course does not explain all the eyewitness accounts.
The Valentich Disappearance: In 1978, a light aircraft disappeared without a trace over the ocean. It seems like a tragic accident until the radio transmissions are taken into account: the plane’s pilot, Frederick Valentich, reported being followed by an aircraft air traffic control had no record of. He reported it being “metallic like” and “shiny on the outside”, and then claimed, “it just vanished”. Valentich also reported that the aircraft was hovering over him and even stopped in mid air at one point, allowing him to circle around it. His last words to air traffic control were “it is hovering and it is not an aircraft”; all that followed was seventeen second of loud metallic scraping, and he was never heard from again.
The Maracaibo Incident: In 1886, a strange incident was reported in Venezuela. According to witnesses, a UFO appeared during a thunderstorm, hovering over a hut in the village. The object hummed loudly, and within a short time, all occupants of the hut got sick with radiation poisoning. The trees around the hut withered and died. Even today, with modern medical knowledge, the incident remains unexplained.
The William Schaffner Incident: In September 1970, an object was spotted over the North Sea, and Schaffner took off in order to follow it. He reported intercepting a “conical object” and then all contact with him was lost. There was no sign of him for three months, when his undamaged plane was discovered on the seabed, without his body. His body was never found. During the time of this incident, other sightings were reported in the UK, from autumn 1970 - the time Schaffner vanished - to spring 1971.
